When I worked as a clockmaker I got the idea to build a steampunk version of a Startrek tricorder. All of the instruments built into it are fully functional, so you can actually use it as a hobby weather station as well as a nice bit of kit for your steamy costume. Additionally you could open it and store things inside. I went to Steampunk Worlds Faire as a paranormal investigator and packed the box with all sort of items from Zenner cards to a functioning EM detector.
